After having read this book of yours, (and, I might add, I also "know it all") I just again realised how important it is to make a list of things that need to be done when installing a new system or fixing an old one. Well, anyway, Robert, thanks for doing so for us....
A point that I have often considered in the past, is this matter of getting an "old" version of XP up to date with the latest fixes. Why is it not possible to create an update CD that contains all the necessary updates that were installed since first installing the system on my disc? (Or am I missing something and everybody else knows how to do this?). After all, if I open my "add or remove programs" panel, all the updates to my system are listed. Is it really necessary to go and download the whole lot again from the internet? Maybe to you guys with broadband connection this is not really an issue, but I promise you my modem connection is SLOOWWW!
You can download SP2 from Microsoft but be warned it is a 266meg download. Then with a program called nlite you can intergrate your Windows Xp install cd with the SP2 you downloaded. It is a nice program and it is freeware.
You still have a lot of updates to install but doing this saves about 70 to 110 meg from update site.
