How bad do I need a fan?

Postby matt_fg » Fri Oct 10, 2008 4:58 pm

I am building my next computer (for the first time) and I am not sure how important fans are. I mean obviously they are very important but in this instance, I already have one or two and I need to know if I need more.
Also, what is the average amount of fans? I have seen people saying they put in 3 120mm fans and 2 80mm fans and that seems like a lot. But, I have seen people saying they put in just 2 80mm fans. That seems like not enough but I am just not sure. Help please.

I am either going to get one of two cases.
CASE 1: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... =A406-1069
CASE 2: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... 8&CatId=32

Case one has two 120mm fans included and case two has two 120mm fans include with a 80mm fan.
Is that enough?

It helps to know what chips you're going to be running. I have 2 computers at home. One is a Pentium 4 at 2.4Ghz and 1GB of RAM that I use for the net and movies and littlethings. I have 1 fan on the heatsink of the processor (this is almost obligatory) , and 1 screwed onto the heatsink of the Northbridge.

The other computer is a professional workstation with 2 Xeon processors running at 3.4GHZ each with 4GB of RAM and 3 hard disks plus a video card that resembles the one you wanted to buy. It's a big machine and has 4 80mm fans in front , 1 on each processor , 1 in back as an exhaust , and another one in front of the power supply (not counting the one in back). Maybe having 2 for the power supply is overkill and less efficient but its the only one that has leds and i think it looks cool.

so thats 8 fans in total.
do i need that many fans? probably not...i just hate having spare parts lying around so i find things to do with them.

So for an average system I would say one on the processor , one/two in back , and if possible one/two in front for intake. the intake fans will cool off the hard disks and most of the parts on the motherboard. the fans in the back will suck the hot air out.
Anyways it's different for every system , what you'll be doing , and for how long you plan on running it in the day. A server that works 24/7 will need more cooling than a home computer that's on maybe 4 hours a day. Hope this helps
